This guidance is aimed at parents.

It is recommended that children Grade 1 - 2 should do one hour's homework every week. This may seem alarming. But what it really entails, is children reading with their carers or doing informal games to build up mathematical skills.

There is no official suggestion that very young children will be doing very demanding work on their own, and an hour a week is fairly easy to reach in a few sessions. This seems a very modest target for families to aspire to - and many parents will do much more than this with their children.
